« What's Slappin' In My Trunk »
This week it's time for a wake up call...

This week I'm slappin' the latest from San Francisco's own Dregs One, The Wake Up Call. Dregs One has been on the San Francisco underground scene for a while now reppin' the Gas Mask Colony, working with Equipto, and even winning a Thizzler Freestyle Fightclub battle, but this week he drops his debut album The Wake Up Call. This isn't his first musical project, but The Wake Up Call is Dreg One's first official solo release; the project features the likes of Equipto, Opio, and Telli Prego. The Wake Up Call isn't your normal underground Bay record, it is more of a stab at the political and social norms of the times. Dregs One speaks on the the failings of President Obama, on a the politically charged track Letter To The President. Dregs One poses the question to the President, "Where is that health care?, How is the recession going? and Where is Osama's body?" These are the same questions that many Americans that voted for Obama are asking themselves now, so it's nice to hear a rapper put all of these grievances into a single track. The ending line on Letter To The President says it all "Dregs One, a man taking a stand against the lie you have become." Dregs One just doesn't tackle political leaders on The Wake Up Call but also speaks on the social situation of the world. Utopia discusses the economical gap between rich and poor, how the environment is being misused, and corporate greed. Utopia makes you really imagine on how things could be. Hopefully Dregs One's song Utopia will help people push for a better tomorrow. Now The Wake Up Call isn't all political and social raps, Dregs One keeps it lighthearted with tracks like It's All One Love and Bay Waters. It's nice to hear some tracks that keep the mood upbeat when there are so many tracks that speak on the plight of the day. Other slappers on The Wake Up Call include Knowledge featuring Opio and Equipto and Words. Although those are some of my favorite tracks off The Wake Up Call each song deserves a good listen. Now my one problem with Dregs One's The Wake Up Call is Dregs' rap style. His rhymes and flow seemed a little labored and doesn't flow like other prominet rappers in the game. I think that his spits will evolve in time, but he needs some more work. With that being said I think the message on The Wake Up Call is far more important then Dregs' rap style. Mac Dre once said "It's not what you say, but how you say it"... I would have to disagree with him on that one when it comes to The Wake Up Call. If you are tired of being pushed around, stepped on by the goverment, and held down by the system, or if you are still unclear on the problems of the day go out and cop The Wake Up Call by Dregs One available now on ITUNES, and WAKE YOUR ASS UP!!!
