« What's Slappin' In My Trunk »

This week I'm so rich....

Trip'n 4 Life - Philthy Rich

This week I have been slappin' the latest from Philthy Rich, Trip'n 4 Life. I'm not going to front and tell you all that I have been knowing about Philthy Rich and all his music for hella long. Trip'n 4 Life is actually the first album I have heard from Rich, and I was very impressed. When it comes to lyrical content and flow, Philthy Rich is real street shit; he holds nothing back, which makes you feel like you are stuck in the middle of Sem City with no way out.  Every track on Trip'n 4 Life is real grimy hood rap, but that's they way I like my gangsta rap. I don't want to make it sound like Trip'n 4 Life is half done on the production side when I say grimy; it's quite the opposite. Every track is on lock when it comes to slappin' bass beats, tight vocals, and precise mastering. There are a host of features from some of the Bay's hottest emcees including E-40, Rydah J. Klyde, Matt Blaque, Messy Marv, J-Stalin and many, many more. Now lets get into some of the tracks off Trip'n 4 Life. The album kicks off with Don't Get It Confused which features a dope drum track that pops. Don't Get It Confused is the Trip'n 4 Life manifesto, letting us all know what Philthy Rich is about. Make sure your treble is way down if you're going to play it thoughbecause it will make your speakers blow. Up next is the title track off Trip'n 4 Life, Trip'n 4 Life featuring Dolla Bill and Du Damage. Philthy Rich gives it up to the life of a thug on Trip'n 4 Life and promises to never change. The song is a declaration to the streets and it's a fitting theme to the album. One of my favorite tracks, Feel'n Like Pac featuring E-40, is actually the lead single off Trip'n 4 Life. Feel'n Like Pac opens up with a recording of an interview of Pac and also features clips of Pac interviews for the chorus. Philithy Rich touches on some deeper issues that Pac brought up such as not having a positive male role model and being a convict. Philthy makes it clear that he isn't saying he is Pac, he is just saying that he is feeling like Pac, which is crucial to understanding the song. There is also a Feel'n Like Pac Remix on Trip'n 4 Life which features Young Noble, Richie Rich, and Yukmouth all who had worked with Pac extensively when he was alive. Both versions are dope, don't sleep! Another banger on the album and featuring one of my favorite Bay Area rappers is So Much Pain featuring Rydah J. Klyde Stevie Joe and Matt Blaque. So Much Pain is one of the "deeper" tracks off the album, but I hate to use the word deeper because you can feel the heart in everyone of Philthy Rich's songs. So Much Pain just has a different feel to it than the rest of the track listing; it's more of a street prayer. So Much Pain features Rydah J. Klyde, who has to be my favorite member of the Mob Figaz. I wish Klyde would do his own project, becasue he kills any track that he is featured on. So Much Pain even features a 2Pac sample; you can really tell that Pac has a huge influence on Philthy Rich. Other slappers that you will be riding to off Trip'n 4 Life include 10 Feet Deep featuring Dem Hoodzstars & J-Stalin, Project Nigga featuring Messy Marv and Mitchy Slick (look out for the Rich and Marv album coming soon!), and I'm Jus Sayin' Tho. I wasn't too sure what I was going to get from Philthy Rich and Trip'n 4 Life, but what I found out that Rich has heart. If you are going to go hard you might as well go as heard as you can, and Philthy Rich does just that on Trip'n 4 Life. This album is not for the week hearted, so don't be no punk and cop Trip'n 4 Life
