« What's Slappin' In My Trunk - Revenue Retrievin' Edition Part 1 »
This week we have something special, two brand new E-40 albums....
This week I have been slappin' E-40's latest, Revenue Retrievin' Graveyard Shift & Overtime Shift. That's right E-40 follows up his highly acclaimed Revenue Retrievin' Day Shift & Night Shit with another double disc project that solidifies the return of Mobb Music. Graveyard Shift & Overtime Shift both boast over 20 tracks each (Deluxe Itunes Edition) so I will be breaking it down this week with two editions of What's Slappin' In My Trunks. Lets kick it off with Overtime Shift, but look out for my review of Graveyard Shift later this week. E-40 kicks off Overtime Shift with a throwback, Mr. Flamboyant 2k11 that bridges the gap between 1991 and 2011. Mr. Flamboyant 2k11 kicks off the same way as the original; with E-40 singing a little Mobb tune and also features the same "oooo" sample that had the original poppin'. If you were a fan from back in the day and is not sure if you are still into 40, slap Mr. Flamboyant 2k11 and you will soon realize that E-40 has only gotten better as an MC. E-40 links up with his rap colleague and cousin B-Legit all over the double albums, but Drugs is the first of these tracks. E-40 and B-Legit just have a way of coming together that few MC in the game have. The two have very deferent styles, but their flows compliment each other in a very unique way which is apparent on Drugs. Drugs has that real Mobb Music production featuring that heavy bass and piano loop that just makes you feel like you are sitting at the round table plotting some dirt. Now remember Overtime Shift is over 20 tracks so I'm going to pick out some of my favorites, but really all the tracks slap of the ricter. Slow It Down featuring J. Stalin, and Decadez is an official banger. Sick Wid It and Livewire connect on Slow It Down. I see J. Stalin as the leader of the new school in the Bay and I see E-40 as the King so to hear these two bosses of independent hustle come together is realllll nice. Another banger that is breaking my speaker box as we speak is, In The Morning featuring Beeda Weeda and Work Dirty. E-40 hits us with some knowledge right off the bat "Never explain to the po po and tell them shit, because they ain't the judge" truth! Beeda Weed and Work Dirty really shine on the track killing their verses. I hope 40's national apeal will put some shine on Beeda and Word Dirty, because they deserve it. Other claps On Overtime Shift include Punkin' Em Out, Born In The Struggle featuring Dr. Cornel West and Mike Marshall, and Click About It featuring The Click, Harm and Bosko. Click About It reunites the first family of Hip Hop and is one of the dopest tracks on either albums. Overtime Shift is some of the freshest music to come out the Bay in a while and it does it all with staying true to E-40's Mobb Musis roots. It would have been easy for E-40 to make some music that would be "radio friendly" or easier listening, but I give him so much respect for walking his own path, which shows in the music. I'm going to leave you with the video to one of the hardest tracks on Overtime Shift, My Money Straight, and be on the look out for Part 2 of our E-40 Revenue Retrievin' coverage....
