FREE DOWNLOAD: Scarub - The California EP

Scarub of the Living Legends cew has blessed us this week with a free EP, The California EP. Sometimes I go off theme with my column and pick some music that is from outside the Bay Area, but I have good reason to be slappin' The California EP this week. First of all Scarub if you didn't already know is part of the Living Legends crew who are comprised of MC from Oakland and LA. Scarub has deep ties in the Bay and gives it up to the Yay Area all over The California EP. Yes Scarub is from L.A. and we as Northern Californians are "supposed" to hate on the Bay, but The California EP isn't The LA EP, its the California EP; Scarub represents the feel and soul of the entire state of California on this shit. The California EP kicks off with California Dreamin' an Eligh produced track that takes the Classic The Mamma And The Pappas song and gives it a 2011 Hip Hop make over. I've heard California Dreamin' sampled before, but I would say this has to be favorite because of Scarub's ever evolving flow and his true love for California. His true passion for California Hip Hop comes alive in That's What's Up featuring Toni Scruggs. Scarub's voice and delivery tend to change subtly all over the track to empathize the different vocab/accents/tones that other California rappers have embodied in the past. The untrained ear might not catch it at first, but make sure to give That's What's Up a second listen to catch the true embodiment of That's What's Up. California Sunrise is hands down my favorite track on The California EP. The beautiful thing about California Sunrise is that Scarub makes the track feel like you are awaking on a "California High"...anything is possibe. Dirty Gold lays down an elegant hook that makes me want to put the computer down and enjoy the California sun right now! When a song makes you proud, happy, and inspired all at the same time, then you know its more then just another track. Scarub has just given us a California Sunrise, but he ends the The California EP with Just Like The Sun a track that gives you the feeling you are watching the sunset with your girl on an empty beach in California. It is truly a beautiful song that showcases Scarub's knack for existentialist lyrics. When you play Just Like The Sun your heart will be warmed, well that is if you share the same kind of California Love. Scarub, has always delivered dope lyrics, thoughout songs, and the courage just to be himself, The California EP is a must have for anybody from the Golden State. Ok Bay Areans, let's take a trip down the coast to L.A. to rock with my boy Scarub, so we can unite the whole damn state.
