« What's Slappin' In My Trunk »
This week I found the Lost Tribe....
This week I've been slappin' Sophie from Lost Tribe. Now who is Lost Tribe you might ask? Shit I asked myself the same question, however I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Lost Tribe consists of JustLuv on the production and Agustus Thelefant on the mic, together the create heavy bassed, crunchy synth progressive Hip Hop. I have to keep it real Sophie was the first time I have even heard of Lost Tribe so I wasn't really sure what I was going to get on the record, but what did catch my eye at first was a whole host of dope collaborators on the album including Talib Kweli, Casual, The Grouch, The Cuf, and a ton of others. After the initial skim over the featured artist and bio I sat down to give Sophie a good listen. Sophie kicks off with the initial Intro. The Intro isn't much to ride to like most Intros tend to be. What it does do though is introduce us to the forward thinking production and rhymes we are about to hear. For the real kick off the duo give us Come Down featuring Casual. Come Down as a dope beat that the B-boys could really break too. Cusual does his thing on the first verse then Agustus takes the second verse and kills his part. What is dope though about Come Down is that Lost Tribe gives respect to Smashrockwell and gives him the third verse. Another dope feature on Sophie is The Grouch on After The Lights On. Justluv delivers a slow club anthem that is crafted with a complicated drum beat and zappy synth. The Grouch lays his normal stay above the influence of the world rap, but for some reason it really feels like a verse I can get behind with a drink. Agustus does a really catchy hook on After The Lighs On, that takes a song about not really partying and the bad things that is associated with that scene and makes it feel like a party song. I love the double entendre. Sophie isn't all about features with tracks including Boombox and Live Like A Rebel. On the later, Boombox Agustus lays down a complicated sometimes choppy flow that I havn't heard before. They say that good rappers copy a style and do it well, but good MC create their on stlye. Boombox is a great example of Agustus unique style. Now I really wasn't sure what I was going to get with Sophie, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear a different kind of sound that wasn't afraid to be experimental. If your looking for a thugged out rap album, or even an underground backpack million raps a second album your not going to get it. What you will discover though is a new sound that will leave you scratching your head and saying, "I didn't know that could be done". Make sure you go out and cop the new album Sophie and listen to what the future will sound like!
