Thizzler: Where are you from?
Cartel 360: San Francisco, California! Grew up in between Lakeview where a lot of rappers from (24kGoldn & Cellski), and the Excelsior which is the Outter Mission…
T: How did you begin making music?
360: I recorded my 1st song when I was 10. I started really getting serious when I lived in the projects out of state tho…
T: How did you get the name Cartel 360?
360: My teacher read some of my rhymes in Middle School and they were all about crime, so he asked me if I did any of that, at that age I didn’t, so he challenged me to only write about what I do & to not use cuss words…Ever since then I had to get creative with my shit- that’s where the idea 360 came in. The “Cartel” is because I’m part Colombian, like Narcos, and there were already other artists with the name 360.
T: How would describe your musical style?
360: With all humility folks say I am original so you can’t really compare me to anyone. But my favorite artists are Tupac, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis!
T: What inspired the album?
360: I’ve been viral on social media, I’ve been all over the news for activism, I’ve had blessings in stand up comedy, I even got multiple college degrees…but during this pandemic I realized that my soul has always been in music! So before it’s too late my goal is to make these next 5 years the rap hustle!
T: What makes this body of work different than others?
360: I’m not doing it for the money or the fame. It’s all about the passion for me. I wear a ski mask and a black hoody in every video so that I can represent all of my niggas in ghettos everywhere! We equal…I could be you.
T: What message do you want fans to walk away with after listening to your music?
360: I was a real OG criminal! Everything you hear in rap songs I can relate to. But there’s more to life than that. A lot of my friends & family ended up dead, in jail, crippled, crazy, on drugs, etc. And I want better for my people. We need to change our values.
T: What’s next for you?
360: I’m publishing a book of poetry next year and uploading a freestyle every week all of 2022!
T: Is there anything else you want to say?
360: Everybody deserves to dream (and I don’t believe in hating so I wish them the best) but Hip Hop is an art. A craft. And some people ain’t meant to do it. So I hope I inspire some folks to be more creative, study history, and I challenge them to improve their lyrics so they could stop saying or doing what has already been done! Nowadays almost everyone is recycling content. The Bay influences the world culturally but it isn’t expressed in our rap music like it should be!
